Drag racing photos by Greg Myhra - Call me a virgin. Having grown up in the San Francisco Bay area, I had never made the time to attend the famous Bakersfield March Meet. So when the occasion of the GoodGuys-organized 41st running coincided with my 40th birthday, I decided I had to attend. Why did I wait until I lived on the East Coast? Record crowds turned out to watch as 34 (that is not a typo!) front motored top fuelers battled to make two eight-car fields. When the smoke cleared, and the track fell silent on Sunday afternoon, "Wild" Bill Alexander had piloted the Ground Zero fueler to his first March Meet win after more than 40 years. Mixed in with all of the fuelers was a stunning array of drag racing machinery, along with all the extras: swap meet, loads of vendors and a way-cool show 'n shine. And no trip to Bakersfield would be complete without a visit to Zingo's Cafe to bulk up before a long day at the track.
